Google AdSense Gift 2006: Digital Photo Frame

Google has begun giving out their AdSense gifts for the 2006 holiday season and the gift is a digital photo frame (GTA-316).

According to the instructions, it's a 960x240 screen and supports JPG images, MP3, WMA or WAV audio files and AVI movies. It also has a SD card reader for extra memory.

So, that converter software (whatever the hell it does) won't accept anything that has been touched by an editor. If i take unaltered pics straight from the digital camera, it works.

So, I've filled the thing up with raw photos.

Now for the next problem.... Even though it's plugged in for juice, the battery light won't go away.

Google, great idea except the product sucks.

Joe T's recommendations worked for me. I was getting "FILE ERROR" on many (but not all) of my pics. I simply opened and re-saved them within MS Paint, and now the frame displays them. You do also seem to have to turn the unit off after transferring files for all the new files to display.

Thanks tons for the MSPaint tip, i have been searching all over the web looking for some hint on how to get photos w/ any editing done to not give error message. It is just dumb to load huge, raw photos into it, with such a small display screen, and yes, i do know I can stick a SD card in to for more memory. Anyone know what its built in memory capacity is. BTW--the batteries that came w/ it lasted about 30 min.

What a POS! I tried the MS-Paint tip, as well as turning the unit off, and most of the pix still give a File Error. For the supposedly smart people at Google, what a bunch of morons! Aside from the unit not working, I wasted a bunch of time trying to figure out who gave it to me.

Jeff says:

I figured that since this came from Google that it'd at least work with photos exported from Picasa. No dice. I still had to do the MS Paint trick.

I also have that annoying battery indicator even though I'm plugged in too.

We spend 30-40K per MONTH on AdWords ... I feel almost insulted by this gift which seems to be picked out of a bargain bin.

Sometimes it's better to give nothing, than to give something like this...

The idea is good, but it's so buggy ... you'd think the technology was just invented yesterday.

Finally I can get pictures on it.

I have found out how to get rid of the battery icon, you need to power the frame from a USB port. Then and only then does it remove that stupid icon. I am putting my frame nowhere near my computer so I guess I am SOL.

Has anybody figured out how to have it display images for more then 5 secs? I found the menu option and discovered you can change it to 20 but I can't seem to get it to actually change (If I move to the next menu item or exit the screen and come back it shows 5 again.)

Any ideas?

Mine isn't working either. I tried the Paint trick but to no avail. I'm sure I'll figure out a way to get it working, but it is a bit disappointing that it should be this problematic for so many people. Was that disc that came with it supposed to have software on it? I thought it was a blank disc since it doesn't say anything on it. Maybe that's what is needed to make it work properly.

Good luck everyone!

Hey!

You guys are seriously a bunch of complainers, I mean, most company's don't even bother to give you a card, must-less a card and a gift, what are you expecting? A Plasma TV, new computer, a new Porsche?

I tried it on another computer, and worked, I guess my USB port on my computer was bad, never used it much anyways.
I must admit that this does have a fair amount of bugs, and the instructions were practicly usless. But really, complaining never helps with something like this. Google's not going to pay 2 million dollars on christmas gifts.

But yep, the MS Paint trick worked for me. Thanks guys.

Works great now, and I'm showing it to all of my friends Google is definitely one of the most friendly companies around. Really, you should have no room to complain at this.

Anyways, enjoy the holidays!

Mine works fine displaying pictures. Plugged it into USB port on my computer, deleted the samples they had (including movie and music) to free up more space, dragged over some photos and away we went.
Now, if we could just find an answer to Tzvi's issue. I also tried changing from 5 second displays to a different duration. Whenever I toggled off one option it switched back to its original state (as per Tzvi's experience). Pretty frustrating. I'll check back from time to time to see if someone comes up with the resolution for this one...

The device will die after one day of BATTERY use. Battery is for short term use only.
For normal use, the device comes with two “normal usage” power supplies:
USB Cable to be plugged in DIRECTLY to your Computer. Plugging in to USB Hubs, that are not “Self Powered”, will not work in some cases.
AC Adaptor is also provided for normal use.

As far as Loading images, it’s very easy:
For PC Users:
Turn the unit on
Plug the unit in to the USB Port on your Computer using the cable provided
Go to “My Computer” under your Start Menu on your Computer Desk Top
Go to appropriate “Removable Disk Icon” and double click to open
Open “Photo File”
Drag your .jpg files to this folder
Turn unit off
unplug from your PC
After you turn the unit back on, your image should now be viewable

For Mac Users:
Turn the unit on
Plug the unit in to the USB Port on your Computer using the cable provided
Double Click on the “Drive Icon” on your Desk Top
Go to “Photo File: and Double Click to open
Drag you.jpg files to this folder
Turn unit off
unplug from your Mac
After you turn the unit back on, your image should now be viewable

“File Errors” occur when the device is unplugged from your Computer without turning the unit off first.

spencer, I had the same problem with the Google digital photo frame GTA-316 (SUNPLUS SPCA536) blue screen of death. I solved the seemingly terminal problem by inserting a SD memory card into the card slot on top and suddenly the PC would see that device and I could access the whole thing again and DELETE the problematic JPGs and add new ones that comply with the JPG format that the device will accept. I finally got mine working after doing the following:

1. All image titles have to be ALL caps. This includes the JPG portion of the name (I.E. IMAGE.JPG, not IMAGE.jpg).

2. All images have to be opened and saved in MS Paint.

3. File names should NOT include any dashes, underscores, etc.

4. Images MUST be in the photo directory (obvious, but still important).

If you do all that... the thing seems to work fine.

SUCCESS under Linux!! I don't do Windoze, so the MS Paint trick didn't work for me. It turns out it's not necessary. The trick is to mount the USB mass storage device as an "msdos" file system, NOT a "vfat" file system. Copy your pictures over. Unmount, unplug, power off, power on and the pictures appear.

It still crashes randomly and is basically pretty crappy, but at least it displays my pictures now.

Everyone is just missing the point with this. Some dumb monkey at Google forgot an important sticker on the packet; it should have read "Google Picture Frame Beta". This is obviously an extended user test for a new Google business unit - the real digital imaging unit. Soon everyone on the planet will be sent one of these free. When plugged into your computer it will display random snaps based on what you are surfing or just feeling like at the time (they know everything after all), this delightful experience will be interspersed with 'relevant' advertisements.

If it doesn't work, feel proud as you are part of a grand guinea pig experiment!

P.S. managed to get this POS working (mmm, nice to have to use Microsoft software to do so, someone took their eye off the ball there... too many stock options methinks). Now I have 5 photos on it, I have an emergency present for the wife if I don't have enough time to sort the rest of my Christmas shopping!

For the people STILL whining how theirs "doesn't work":

1. Hook the device up to your PC (using the USB cord)

2. Turn device on

3. Open a picture (preferably horizontal orientation) in MSPaint or use that Imagicon program someone suggested.

4. Save said picture in not too high a resolution, and name it in ALL CAPS

5. Copy said picture to the photo folder on your device

6. Turn your awesome frame OFF

7. Turn your awesome frame ON

Forget MSPaint and other complicated methods: just download Image Resizer powertoy for Windows, resize selected photos to 640x480 and copy them to your frame's PHOTO folder.

*NO*, you do not need to buy a SD memory card.
Simply use the built-in memory (24 MB) using the provided USB cable. Works fine on Windows XP.

*NO*, you do not need to use uppercase filenames only.
It works fine for me (use A-Z a-z 0-9 - but no spaces and spacial characters).

Unfortunately the divice does not understand all flavours of JPG formats. But it works WITHOUT using tools from Microsoft
Select the photos you like on Google Picasa, click on export, resize them to 640x480 (so Picasa will touch every file) and store them on the "Removeble Disk".

It's free and it works

TO ALL THOSE WHO CAN'T GET IT RECOGNIZED BY WINDOWS!!!

I just bought one last week, everytime i plugged it to a usb port, windows show that message and not on the CD could get it working properly. the next day i tried to conect it to another port and it finally worked.
I don't think it's a problem with the USB port but maybe windows making a conflict with devices that used this port before.

OK, to recover from the Blue Screen of Death, you simple have to boot it with a SD card in place. You can then access the internal memory and remove the photo files that are causing the problem.

By formatting pictures in Photoshop to 240x320 jpg files and then opening and saving them with MS Paint I had no trouble loading the images.

I carefully labeled the images so they would play in a particular sequence. The player appears to play them in reverse order and to some extent in random order.

Each time I load them they appear to play in a different order.

Has anyone figured out how to get them to play in a pre-defined sequence?

My son gave me his, I tried for a couple hours to make it work. Manual is written in strange "English" and is no help. Buttons, screen text, and imagery are not intuitive. This web search help here didn't help. I can't even get it to show up via my Mac USB. Frustrating, giving up.

I also received this contraption.

- The LCD has a funny and very annoying noise which should not be there.

- The software/firmware is buggy and very very basic and unpolished.

- The manual is clearly written by a non-native and is layed out very poorly.

All in all, a very cheap solution which you'd probably get in Hong Kong for $10 US, possibly less.

Had Google given this device to any of their techs for evaluation, it had been discarded as an unfinished piece of crap within minutes.

Aside from good looks (although the buttons aren't very accurately positioned within their slots) this unit needs much more work to be "consumer grade".

All of this could have been easily avoided by basic QA.

It wasn't a good try, it was a really good failure.

It's nice to see gifts given but either give something that's usable or don't give anything at all.

Better luck next time

Recently I've moved to a new place and was looking for something to decorate my home. I found this little toy sitting in the drawer in my office. I got this from Google for X'mas. and never had the time to even open the box. I'm glad that I tried the frame in July and can find all the solutions online today. How about getting rid of the annoying battery icon??

My wife started working again after several kids... she asked me to do frame with pictures -- and I remebered the Google christmas gift -- and started experiencing the problems with this digital frame.

Thanks to the comments it works now with the paintshop pro tip. The software that was delivered gives nothing but errors to me.

Thanks Google - Thanks for the tips!

I think it's hilarious how long it has taken some of us to open the box! With the holiday 2007 gift around the corner, I decided to open mine and import Christmas photos of the kids from 2001 through 2006. It took THREE hours of my life, but with the Paint Shop trick mentioned here, I got the job done. The upside of opening each file in Paint Shop is that it gets around the annoying fact that the frame insists on sorting your images by date rather than alphabetically. Just open them in the order that you want them to appear so the 'date modified' sort will match your alphabetical sort.

a bit slow and i know as much as about computers as i do about astrophysics...but this thing is pretty easy really...stick the photos in the photo box, turn the thing off and back on again and that's it - don't try to be clever with all the fancy crap. just remember, where there's a way there's an easy way!!
