Google will have to turn over every record of every video watched by YouTube users, including users' names and IP addresses, to Viacom, which is suing Google for allowing clips of its copyright videos to appear on YouTube, a judge ruled Wednesday. Although Google argued that turning over the data would invade its users' privacy, the judge's ruling described that argument as "speculative" and ordered Google to turn over the logs on a set of four tera-byte hard drives.

Google correctly argued that “the data should not be disclosed because...

With Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android platform getting all the press these days, it’s easy to forget that another company, Nokia, is still by far and away the worldwide leader in mobile sales. It is a sleeping giant. And with the two noisy newcomers in its cave, it has awoken — and it’s hungry.

Not even a day after the buzz-worthy purchase of the location-based mobile social network, Plazes, Nokia has made a much larger move. One that will continue to evolve the mobile landscape: It has bought the Symbian mobile operating...

As expected Yahoo has announced a non-exclusive ad pact with Google. In an announcement, the company says it has agreed with its arch rival to run ads against some search queries as well as other of its web properties. From the announcement: “Under the terms of the agreement, Yahoo! will select the search term queries for which – and the pages on which – Yahoo! may offer Google paid search results.”

The nonexclusive deal is aimed at giving a lift to Yahoo’s finances, and the company said it would generate an additional $250...

CBS is acquiring CNET for $1.8 billion in cash. The purchase price comes to $11.50 per share, representing a 44.6 percent premium over last night’s closing price of $7.95. This is that big acquisition we’ve been waiting for from Quincy Smith’s CBS Interactive — it appears that this represents a nice profit for them. The deal was approved unanimously by the CNET board and is expected to close in Q3. Release.

CNET's influence may be declining, and as far as finances go, the company's 27-month slide can't be ignored. Also, $1.8...

After Microsoft withdrew its $33-a-share offer for Yahoo on Saturday, the question was how far Yahoo’s stock would drop. On Monday, the markets gave an initial answer: plenty.

At 12:20 p.m., Yahoo’s shares were off about 14 percent, at $24.65, after closing at $28.67 on Friday — a day when the companies were said to be escalating their talks on a merger. The shares recovered some ground after losing about 20 percent at the start of Monday’s trading.

Microsoft’s own shares edged up slightly, to $29.34, from their Friday close of...

Microsoft is withdrawing its offer for Yahoo after talks between the two companies broke down on Saturday. Should investors sue or back Yang?

Microsoft hiked its offer to $33 a share, but Yahoo was holding out for $37 a share, the source said. The two sides met face to face again Saturday, but remained far apart.

Although price was a key issue, Microsoft also had strategic concerns and saw it as unlikely to achieve a friendly integration process. According to a source close to Microsoft, Yahoo founder and CEO Jerry Yang had "unrealistic...

Twitter to jump off Ruby on Rails

Twitter may soon dump the application framework in favor of Java or PHP, according to TechCrunch.

Twitter has been struggling with scaling issues. The group messaging site’s once-frequent problems with downtime have lessened, but it still experienced a caching problem a week ago that made the service virtually useless for an entire weekend. The company may have decided that if it wants to continue growing — without risking further outages that would hurt said growth — Rails wasn’t going to cut it.

These rumors come little more...
