Microsoft executive heads to Amazon.com
A veteran Microsoft Corp. executive who led the development of Windows Vista, the delayed update to the company's biggest product, is leaving to join Amazon.com.
Brian Valentine, senior vice president in Microsoft's Windows Core Operating System Division, is expected to join Amazon in mid-September. The move follows Microsoft's announcement in August that it would reassign Valentine, a 19-year company veteran, to an unspecified position following Vista's release early next year.
Microsoft last week said it completed Windows Vista Release Candidate 1, one of the final stages prior to the product's launch. Vista's retail debut is currently slated for January, missing the critical holiday shopping season, after Microsoft announced the latest in a series of delays earlier this year. The PC operating system is the Redmond company's biggest moneymaker.
A series of executives have left Microsoft over the past year, but Valentine's pivotal position and tenure at the company make his departure particularly notable. In a statement Tuesday, Microsoft said the Windows Vista project "remains on track," with Valentine's team now reporting to Jim Allchin, co-president of the Platforms & Services Division.
