Promptu raises $11.6 million for mobile voice search

Promptu, a voice recognition company focused on mobile search, has raised additional $11.6 million round of funding.

The round was led by Steelpoint Capital Partners and included participation by other current investors, including Lauder Partners.

The Menlo Park company has been looking for a strategy for some time now. A year ago, it was focused on letting you search for cable TV programs, and it had raised $22 million to do that.

Promptu’s technology lets people use their voice to find and purchase content on mobile phones. People can press “one button” and issue a voice command to find the titles they want, for example “Coldplay,” and get a list of results.

There are some emerging competitors, including Google, which filed a patent in this area, and V-Enable, which raised $6 million earlier this year.
