Gmail coming out of Beta?

Google has finally announced full availability of Gmail to Australians, who will no longer need to scrounge an invite from an existing Gmail user.

“Gmail is now generally available in Australia and New Zealand. From today, users in Australia and New Zealand will be able to go to www.gmail.com and create a free account, without an invitation or signing up through Google SMS,” the company said.

“Gmail remains otherwise unchanged—offering over 2.7GB of free space, built-in Google search technology, great spam protection and a fast and innovative user experience.”

When Google says “otherwise unchanged”, it really means it. GMail will still remain in beta, more than two years after it launched and millions of users later.

According to Google’s Australian press spokesman, “We have strong internal metrics for what it means for our product to be in or out of beta, and we will take Gmail out of beta once we feel we’ve met these metrics. However, users should know that Gmail is reliable and is quickly becoming more widely available. In fact, tens of millions of users around the world already depend on Gmail every day.”
