Media executives and investors get a pleasant neck ache from watching the skyward path of online advertising revenues. But for those who have to pay for advertising, the trend is bringing some anxiety.
Prices for some online advertising are going up, and some retailers and brand marketers say the big question mark hanging over 2007 is whether publishers will be so emboldened by a strong advertising market that they will raise the prices of ads sharply.

Just four months ago, marketers were sitting on the sidelines of social networks and watching the traffic surge. Now, advertising on social networks has become a top priority. In 2007, ad spending on US social networking sites is expected to spike to $865 million from $350 million in 2006, according to eMarketer's new report, Social Network Marketing: Ad Spending Update. By 2010, eMarketer estimates, spending will hit $2.15 billion.

The eBay/Yahoo! partnership has begun to bear fruit. Yahoo! contextual search ads are beginning to show up in eBay auction listings. Despite assurances back when the deal was announced that ads would be shown for "complementary" products, initial tests are turning up competitive ads. In fact, right now Yahoo! ads are being shown for searches that bring back no auction results. Unfortunately the first reaction of eBay users isn't exactly fantastic.

Google's $6 billion-a-year advertising business is at risk because it can't be sure that anyone is looking at its ads. Click fraud has become a classic security arms race. Google improves its fraud-detection tools, so the fraudsters get increasingly clever ... and the cycle continues. Meanwhile, Google is facing multiple lawsuits as a result.
