Tom.com to buyout eBay China, PayPal

Tom.com is going to announce its takeover of eBay's China division and its PayPal service, the 21st Century Business Herald reported today, citing a well-informed source.

Tom Group is the distributor of Skype, eBay's online telephone service in China.

According to the previous agreement between eBay and Eachnet, eBay will sell its shares to the company before withdrawing from the Chinese market.

‘Godfather of Chinese hooligan-ware’ fights back as Yahoo China launches an all-out assault.

Zhou Hongyi, controversial Internet entrepreneur and former president of Yahoo China, has filed a 3.6-million yuan ($450,000) defamation suit against his former employer in Beijing’s Second Intermediary People’s Court.

The suit, filed Thursday, came after Yahoo China general manager Tian Jian accused Mr. Zhou in a Monday press conference of unethical business practices.

All year, human-rights and free-speech advocates have been chastising big U.S. Internet companies for helping to censor the Internet in China. Critics of Beijing's policies have focused on Google, Yahoo!, and Microsoft, all of whose search engines operate in China under requirements to filter results from many Web sites related to such things as independence movements in Taiwan and Tibet, democracy advocates, and the Falun Gong religious movement.

EBay customers are upset over San Jose, Calif.-based auction giant’s decision to stop charging users in China transaction fees, mostly because of intensified competition from Taobao (Alibaba) and Tencent, at a time when they are being hit by price hikes as high as 400%.

During a recent earnings conference call, eBay CEO Meg Whitman said, ” What I can tell you is that while I think we are behind a tad in China, we have been steadily improving our performance over the last 12 months.”
