There is a new feature in Google Translate that lets users suggest an alternative for incorrectly translated phrases — likely adding "expert" knowledge to Google's statistical translation model in hopes of making their service better.

The new feature only appears to work with languages labeled as "BETA" on the translation tools page — these languages include Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, and Russian.

Over the past few years, Google has been pumping out product after product, most of which are still in "Beta" stage at the time they are released. Eric Schmidt admits that Google has been so aggressive in introducing "a blizzard" of new products that "it's confusing to almost everyone."

Google co-founder Sergey Brin is leading an initiative to see fewer products launched, but with more features. The concern is that with so many new offerings, "You'll have to search for our products before you can find them," Brin said.

Yahoo Beta Mail For All

Yahoo opened up its beta mail to everybody. The ad-supported beta mail brings desktop clients to the web, with calendar, rss, mapping, drag & drop and tabbed navigation. This comes out of Yahoo’s 2004 acquisition of early AJAX innovator Oddpost.

Gmail coming out of Beta?

Google has finally announced full availability of Gmail to Australians, who will no longer need to scrounge an invite from an existing Gmail user.

“Gmail is now generally available in Australia and New Zealand. From today, users in Australia and New Zealand will be able to go to www.gmail.com and create a free account, without an invitation or signing up through Google SMS,” the company said.
