6 back-to-back power outages hit the SOMA neighborhood of San Francisco Tuesday afternoon causing major havoc with popular web services. 365 Main is down, along with craigslist, Netflix, Technorati, Yelp, AdBrite, SixApart (including TypePad, LiveJournal and Vox) and it caused some problems at Current TV as well.
So the big question, where is the backup power at the data centers used by these services? UPS and diesel generators should normally be used a situation like this.

"Who needs the money? We don't really care," Craig Newmark said in an interview at the Picnic '06 Cross Media Week conference here.
"If you're living comfortably, what's the point of having more?" Newmark said.
Craigslist, despite its no-frills layout, gets more than four billion page views per month with just 22 employees.
Measured as a proportion of the number of employees, it claims to rank seventh amongst English language sites, behind Yahoo, AOL Time Warner, Microsoft, Google, eBay and News Corp.

Our job at Tomkins and Scott, my job specifically, was to monitor Craigslist and summarily flag all postings which reflected negatively upon the city in any way. The classified-advertising Web site craigslist has become popular in recent years with young, tech-savvy city dwellers seeking apartments, jobs and for-sale items.
But it's also being used as an Information Age black market for some Seattle-area marijuana dealers.

A rash of robberies in the Bay Area reveals a disturbing trend of computer literate thugs targeting Craigslist users for muggings. According to police reports, several Craigslist users were robbed at gunpoint by people they thought they were meeting to sell goods to.
Two Craiglists robbers we posted about previously were arrested last Wednesday. One of the teenage duo pulled a silver handgun and took the 11 hoodies they were to buy. They drove off, leaving behind a yell of, "This is West Pittsburg" as their parthian shot.
