eBay is one of the most successful Internet-only ventures of all time, so it's not surprising that it has come under near-constant attack by fraudsters and hackers. In the latest attempt, a hacker logged on to the eBay Trust and Security forums and pretended to post as 1,200 separate users, making it appear as if he had actually logged in with each user's account. The posts contained the users' names, contact information, and credit card numbers.
That done, the hacker posted a video of his exploits on YouTube to celebrate his "achievement"...

The government has recently been leaning on eBay to make sure that sellers are not dodging their own tax responsibilities, but eBay wants no part of the government's plan.
In short, the US government wants to treat eBay as a "broker" who would then be required to file notices with the government about how much money its traders have made. The US proposal calls for this reporting to take place only when people sell more than several thousand dollars worth of merchandise in a year.
With so many people making part or all of their living...

eBay plans to pull back from the fast-growing Chinese market by shutting down its main Web site in China and replacing it with a new site that would be largely run by a Beijing-based Internet company, say people familiar with the matter, in the latest sign of trouble afflicting the onetime Internet star.
Under the new arrangement, eBay will hold a 49% stake in the new site with Tom Group holding a 51% share. eBay does not plan to lay off any employees as part of the new setup.
The move could be read as a setback for eBay, which has...

Google announced on Monday that it will sell advertising on eBay's auction sites and create a system to help buyers directly call sellers.
Under the deal, Google will provide exclusive text advertising on eBay outside the U.S. Full terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
"The primary benefit to Google is the addition of a major international network partner" Tim Boyd, an analyst at Caris & Company, said in a research report. "This could be especially helpful to Google in Asia, where it faces much stiffer competition than in Europe...

In a deal between two of the Internet's most prominent players, Google will begin selling advertising for eBay outside the United States and help buyers quickly ring an online merchant to do business.

It will allow potential buyers to call eBay merchants or Google advertisers by clicking a link on a Web page.

The eBay/Yahoo! partnership has begun to bear fruit. Yahoo! contextual search ads are beginning to show up in eBay auction listings. Despite assurances back when the deal was announced that ads would be shown for "complementary" products, initial tests are turning up competitive ads. In fact, right now Yahoo! ads are being shown for searches that bring back no auction results. Unfortunately the first reaction of eBay users isn't exactly fantastic.
