Digg gets more cash, $8.5 million

Digg has raised another $8.5 million in new funding from existing VCs, Greylock Ventures and Omidyar Network. The company, previously had raised close to $3 million from these two firms, and Marc Andreessen, co-founder of Ning and Netscape.

With the newest version of Digg's service, which includes the ability to post and rate podcasts and video, Adelson said that Digg will be able to maintain its lead position.

Revving up the hype even further, the cofounders of the social news site Digg have raised $1 million in financing from Marc Andreessen and Greylock Partners. But the money isn’t for Digg: it’s for Revision3, their video podcasting service that includes the popular podcast DiggNation. Digg co-founder Jay Adelson says DiggNation is already making between $50,000 and $100,000 per month, and the money will allow them to assemble an ad sales team, rent an office and pay regular contributors.

Blogging company Six Apart will soon announce it has purchased Rojo, the web-based feed reader, for undisclosed terms.

TechCrunch blogger Michael Arrington broke the news this morning; he guesses Six Apart paid $5 million.

This deal brings to a close the long saga of the Rojo story. Webwag, the latest creation of ex-Google France chief Franck Poisson, is set to go live at the end of this month, adding more competition to the 'customisable start page' arena.

Webwag is set to take on the likes of Yahoo and Google, as well as independent ventures such as Pageflakes and Netvibes, another France-based start-up that’s backed by Netscape boss Marc Andreessen and Kelkoo founder Pierre Chappaz.

Digg paths to profitability and social networking

Speaking at the Building Blocks conference in San Jose today, Digg founder and chief architect Kevin Rose described his site as a "crazy madhouse of news flying around, 100 percent user powered." The Digg madhouse isn't yet a crazy quilt of ads aimed at increasing revenue, he noted when asked about getting to profitability.
