MySpace currently brings in $25 million a month, and is growing at a rate of 30% each quarter, according to Rupert Murdoch.

Murdoch dismissed criticism that the MySpace audience was aging, giving an advantage to rivals such as college social networking site Facebook. "A lot of young people--college kids, undoubtedly--are going to Facebook. But that doesn't mean they don't stay with MySpace," he said.

Market research firm eMarketer predicted in a report last November that MySpace alone would have $525 million in ad revenue in 2007. The...

Fox Interactive Media President Levinsohn will be replaced by his cousin, Peter Levinsohn, who is currently president of Fox Entertainment digital media.

Ross Levinsohn, whose deal-spotting savvy led him to convince News Corp. Chief Executive Rupert Murdoch to buy popular Internet social network MySpace and games Web network IGN Entertainment, will leave to pursue other ventures, he said in a statement.

MySpace to launch in Japan with Softbank

MySpace Internet business will be launched in Japan this month in a joint venture with Japanese Internet and telecoms group Softbank Corp.

The 50-50 venture, to be called MySpace Japan, will first offer services for personal computers and will eventually allow users to post photos and write blogs via mobile phones.

The firms are expected to announce the deal as early as this week after a meeting between News Corp. Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Rupert Murdoch and Softbank CEO Masayoshi Son, it said.

The YouTube acquisition broadens the horizon somewhat for Google in its relationship with sites like News Corp.'s MySpace. In fact, Google CEO Eric Schmidt and vice president of ad sales Tim Armstrong are set to meet with News Corp. executives this week to discuss new ways of working together. Fox Interactive President Ross Levinsohn confirmed the visit, saying: "If we can figure out the ways to work with them or integrate with them, that could be really good for us."

The acquisition would represent the latest attempt by Viacom to regain ground lost to Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation in the social networking and user-generated content realm.

Viacom lost out to its rival in a bidding war last year for MySpace, now the world’s leading social networking site, when News Corp paid $580m (£304m) for the young company. The acquisition caused News Corp’s rivals to look again at the value of sites that allow users to share their own messages, photos, music and videos.

Irked by terms of service that apparently gave MySpace "a non-exclusive, fully-paid and royalty-free, worldwide license (with the right to sublicense through unlimited levels of sublicensees) to use, copy, modify, adapt, translate, publicly perform, publicly display, store, reproduce, transmit, and distribute" his music, British songwriter Billy Bragg pulled his music from the social networking site.
