Skype has issued a statement as to what went down. It seems that an abnormally high number of restarts after standard software updates affected resources, this caused the network to suffer and become unstable.
"On Thursday, 16th August 2007, the Skype peer-to-peer network became unstable and suffered a critical disruption. Skype said Thursday that software problems have left many of its millions of users without service worldwide. Some users are able to connect to the Skype network but then are quickly disconnected just minutes later.

The founders of peer-to-peer network KaZaA and VoIP phenomenon Skype are working on an online distribution model for network TV programming, according to a recent article in BusinessWeek. The new venture, codenamed "the Venice Project," is reported to aim really, really high: "The idea is to become a dominant TV distribution company for the Internet era, just as companies such as Comcast have dominated TV distribution in the cable era." Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis are said to be talking to "every TV network in town."

EBay, which acquired Skype in September last year, said that there are 13 million registered Skype users in China, about 13 per cent of the total, and more than in any other nation.
After China, the next largest nation for Skype is the US which has fewer than half the Chinese total at about six million. The company claims more than 100 million users worldwide. However, the SkypeOut service, which lets users call traditional telephone numbers at low cost, appears to be of uncertain legality in China.

A long list of senior management changes has been announced today at eBay and its properties PayPal and Skype. The market for all but its services except online auctions has changed so much recently it will be interesting to see what policy and services changes follow.
