
China will overtake the US next year to become the world's largest broadband internet market, analysts have forecast.
The number of broadband subscribers in China is growing at a staggering 79 per cent annually, and will reach 79 million in 2007, consulting firm Ovum predicted in research released today.
Recent estimates from Leichtman Research suggest that the number of broadband connections in the US, currently the world's largest market, is around 51 million.

EBay, which acquired Skype in September last year, said that there are 13 million registered Skype users in China, about 13 per cent of the total, and more than in any other nation.
After China, the next largest nation for Skype is the US which has fewer than half the Chinese total at about six million. The company claims more than 100 million users worldwide. However, the SkypeOut service, which lets users call traditional telephone numbers at low cost, appears to be of uncertain legality in China.
